Happy Chinese New Year 2009!! Its the year of the Ox.
Anyhow, just finished the run of Revenge of a King. It was a Hip Hop theater piece based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Over all I think it was a success.
This show shed light on this generation of hip hop culture, remembered its roots, examined the stereotypes, and illuminated the issues that plague our young people today.
I had a great time working with the director Steve Broadnax. I also had a lot of fun with the cast members and the good people of the Black Theater Troupe as well as Black Poet Ventures.
Throughout the run of the show I was glad to see all different kinds of people come out to experience this work. I was glad to see this show make a positive impact on so many different people. This show may go to the Black National Theater Festival for 2009. I hope it does.
Hip Hop theater is a relatively new form of theater. I think it's a great way to expose young people to live theater, bridge generation gaps, and revive a culture that has been choked by commercialism.. Hip hop theater has power to bring positive change and I'm honored to be a part of it through this show.
